今⽇のオオカミは、とっても⼤⼈しい。
この地に根をはるオオカミのナワバリに⼊ったからではなくて、そのオオカミのことを⼼から尊敬しているからだった。
Today’s wolf was very quiet.
Not because he was in another wolf’s territory, but because he had so much respect for this wolf in particular.
⽬の前に広げられた草⽊染めの作品に、どれほどの⼿仕事が込められているのか。
それを聞くことすら恐れ多くて、かしこまって賞賛の⾔葉を伝える。
「とても⾃分のプロダクトのための素材には頂戴できないけれど、素晴らしいと思っていました」。
振り絞るような声が、オオカミの⼼を捉えた。
「普通だったらこの⽣地は提供できないって断ろうと思っていたんだ。
だけど、あなたのために染めてあげるよ」。
Arthur wondered how much manual labor had gone into the works before us, dyed in their natural colors. Just asking was awe-inspiring, andxpressed his humble admiration. His strained voice showed his wolf-like admiration; “I could never ask for those materials for my own products, but Ithey’re wonderful.” “Normally, I would have to refuse because I couldn’t offer this material. But in your case, I’d be happy to dye some if you would like,” came the reply.
アーサーの表情が、驚きから喜びに変わっていく。
そして⾃分⾃⾝もまたオオカミになってゆく。
「図案の⼊り⽅はこの⽅向がいいです。
コンパクトな⾯積だから、細部の表現はぼやけていないほうが合うと思います」。
もうひとりのオオカミこと染⾊作家の堤さんも、それに応える。
「なるほど、僕もそう思うよ。
それから、草⽊染めだから今⾒ているものと全く同じ⾊合いにはならないよ。
それは⼤丈夫だね？」もちろん問題ないです、とアーサー。
午後の⽇差しが、⼆匹の影を反物に落としていた。
Arthur’s expression changed from surprise to delight. And he changed himself into a wolf again. “The design should start here. Because it’s a compact size, I think it would suit more if the details stand out.” The dyeing artist, Mr. Tsutsumi (the other wolf), answers; “right, I also agree. I must warn you, I dye using natural colors, so it’s impossible to reproduce the exact same color. Is that still OK?” Arthur responds that there is absolutely no problem. The afternoon sunlight made their shadows fall across the material.
数⽇前、図⾯にあった余⽩はきれいになくなっていた。
職⼈たちへの信頼と素材への確信が、完成へと導いていた。
図⾯とは、ものを考える⼈とそれを実現させる⼈が交わる場所なのだ。
同じ空間で呼吸をして、同じ空気で肺を満たして、それから話し合う。
線や数値だけでは、ものづくりは出来ない。
「crystallize」
滞在中の経験をアーサーはクリスタライズ・結晶化と表現した。
⼤地に眠る元素が構造を結び、成⻑して⽬に⾒えるかたちになること。
デザイナーと職⼈のコラボレーションは、これまで⽬に⾒えなかった技術と感性を宿した「かたち」を作ることと⾔えるだろう。
その技術は何百年も受け継がれてきた知識と経験の結晶で、感性は⽇々の暮らしと独特の⾵⼟が育んだ結晶。
それぞれに結ばれてきたものが、さらに⼤きな結晶へと結びつく。
結晶が放つ輝きは、きっとそこから⽣まれている。
「僕にとっては、移動の合間に⾒た景⾊も、出会った⼈も、暮らしも、全てが関わってゆくプロジェクトでした」。
仕事だけではないものが⾒える⽇々だったとお礼を⾔ってくれた。
この数⽇間の経験は、新しい結晶の元となってアーサーの中に息づいている。
「表層に現れるのは先かもしれないけれど、デザインはそういうものだと考えています」。
オオカミの静かな声が、丹後に響いていた。
A few days before, the blank spaces on the design had all but disappeared. His trust in the craftsmen and belief in the materials were guiding him to completion. The design drawing itself was a place for thinkers and creators, all breathing the same air, soaking up the same atmosphere and talking together. Lines and numbers alone can never lead to creation.
‘Crystallize’
During his stay, Arthur described the experience of his stay with the word ‘crystallize’. It’s what happens when the chemical elements lying dormant in the earth join together into structures and grow into things the eye can see. In this case it means that the collaboration between a designer and craftsperson is formed through the skills and ideas we cannot see.
These skills are a crystallization of hundreds of years of knowledge and experience, and these ideas are crystals formed from daily life and the topography of personality. They’re all connected, and connect themselves to bigger crystals. It must be the brilliance of these radiant crystals that leads to the formation of new ones.
“This project is connected to everything: all the scenery I saw travelling, all the people I met, even my daily life,” stated Arthur, showing his gratitude by stating that each day never felt like work. These few days settled themselves in Arthur like a new crystal forming. “What we see on the surface may only be the beginning, but I believe that’s what design is,” his quiet wolf voice resounded throughout Tango.
誰そ彼時には、あなたの⾔葉を思い出すだろう。

狭間にひそむものを⾒つけて、こっちを振り向く。
「いいもの発⾒した！」と⽬を輝かせて。
I’ll remember your words in the twilight.
Entre chien et loup; between a wolf and a dog.
Discovering things hidden in the crevices, and looking over your shoulder.
“I found something!” you say, with a sparkle in your eye.
