⺟なる⾈ vol.03 Motherly Ship

r

No matter how you look at it, they don’t look like typical calico cats, but somehow I see them walking on a street in Paris. The cats that Anais draws somehow have a French look about them. But this could be my presumption.

“I want to go to the cat temple.”

We arrive at Konpira Shrine at Mineyamacho in Tango city. It’s a rare shrine where instead of the komainu (guardian dogs) they enshrine komaneko (guardian cats). The locals call it Komaneko shrine. Anais happily imitates a cat – “meow meow.” As one of the main production regions of silk, sericulture has been popular for a long time in the Tango region. Cats have been valued because they are the natural enemy of mice. Among the guardian cats offered by silk worm famers and thread merchants to the shrine, some are cute playful kittens.

Unable to resist herself, Anais wants to write an ema which are votive pictures; in this case, e-neko (votive cat pictures). “Just write down a wish and offer it to the shrine,” I explain. No doubt, her wish will be about her baby. I worry about the number of stone steps to the shrine, but she seems to have no problem. Phew.

While staying in Tango, Anais and the others have been very busy. Each day, they visit several weaving factories and carry out serious meetings. Means of design, fabric processing methods, production timelines, compatibility with sewing, laying of detailed parts – you have to confirm many items without error. On the weekends, we meet each other and they still have a happy, relaxed expression. “We’re off today, right?” It’s comforting to talk like classmates.

On the last day, there’s a meeting in the same room as the first meeting. They’re revising the pattern Anais created that includes the lines they were decided during these few days, as well as adding extensions to the paper. In the notes written along these hand drawn lines, you can see Anais’ personality. She really is gentle and careful. This reflects her sense of responsibility in being entrusted with this fabric (cargo).

And by the way, the people here are not just cargo themselves. As this is a production area, everyone can make things as they’re artisans. Although you may have known this long before, they want to convey it again. The textiles they weave here will become large sails for your boat. Take in the wind and cut out a new sea route.

This is Tango, a region that has produced silk and woven textiles for over 1,300 years. The fabric made by old looms are beautiful, noble, and give off a sparkle like jewels. I hope everyone can feel this area, no matter where, no matter what fabric was made by which artisan. What you can’t see, you can hear because this is a place where you can see what you can’t verbalize. Indeed, it’s better to have international creators come to Tango.
